What you need to know about changes to water heaters from mid-2026.
Big changes are coming to the plumbing industry, and for our Western Sydney customers, now is the time to prepare. From mid-2026, all plumbing products that come into contact with drinking water must meet new lead-free standards. This includes hot water systems.
At Cheapa Hot Water Western Sydney, we’re helping homeowners and businesses get ready by supplying and installing fully compliant, lead-free hot water systems throughout the region.
Why is lead being phased out in water heaters?
To improve the safety of drinking water in homes across the country, the government is introducing new requirements that limit the amount of lead in plumbing products.
From May 2026, taps, fittings, valves, and hot water systems must contain no more than 0.25% lead in any surface that touches water.
These changes aim to:
- Minimise the risk of lead leaching into household water.
- Align Australia with international safety standards adopted in places like the US and Europe.
- Provide better long-term protection for homes—especially for families with young children.
How to tell if your water heater is lead-free?
To make compliance easier, certified lead-free plumbing products are now marked with a blue WaterMark label. This makes it simple for both tradespeople and customers to spot safe, future-ready products.
While red-labelled items are still available for now, they’ll be gradually phased out for potable water systems after 2026.

What does this mean for your existing hot water system?
If your current water heater is functioning well, you don’t need to rush out and replace it. However, if you’re considering a new hot water system, especially over the next year or two, it’s wise to choose a lead-free model now and get ahead of the changes.
Many trusted brands have already launched compliant products designed for long-term safety and performance.
