You may not be aware but some hot water heater repairs and the installation of any new tank often require the services of both a licensed plumber AND an electrician. Thankfully, our hot water specialists are qualified to undertake both the plumbing and electrical work necessary to complete any repair or installation job. This ensures your hot water system is installed quickly, on time and budget. Plumbers who are not hot water specialists may need to outsource the electrical work required to another tradesperson, thereby holding up the job and adding extra expense due to additional call-out fees charged by employing two tradespeople.

Liverpool hot water heater repairs, replacements and installations
Below are examples of some of the recent customer jobs we’ve completed in Liverpool.
The unusual reason why this customer had no hot water.
This Liverpool customer contacted us when they were experiencing lukewarm water instead of their usual hot supply.
Over the phone, John, guided the customer through some troubleshooting steps to try to resolve the problem without an onsite visit. However, the customer noted there was water pooling near the water heater, which was located under their house. She assumed the dampness was normal for the area, but when the issue couldn’t be fixed remotely, John arranged a visit to the property later that day.
Identifying the cause of the problem.
Upon arrival at the house, John saw significant water pooling around the hot water system. While it’s normal for water heaters to occasionally release small amounts of water, consistent puddles or muddy soil are often a sign of trouble.
After inspecting the system, John quickly identified the source of the leak: a substantial hole in the copper pipe that carried hot water from the tank to the taps and appliances. This leak meant hot water was continuously escaping, leaving the customer with an unreliable supply and only lukewarm water.
What was causing the leak?
Copper pipes are generally durable and known for their longevity. However, over time, the customer’s copper pipe had been rubbing against a nearby brick wall. This friction eventually wore a hole in the pipe, allowing precious hot water to leak 24/7.
Fixing the problem.
The fix was straightforward. John removed the damaged section of pipe and replaced it with a new one. While onsite, he also performed a quick service of the customer’s Rheem gas hot water heater to ensure there were no additional issues.
In just over an hour, the system was back in working order, and the customer was enjoying consistent, trouble-free hot water once again.
Moving a water heater from inside to outside
We are often asked “Can you relocate a hot water system from inside to out?” Yes, you can move your hot water heater from inside to outside—and it’s a service we frequently provide for our customers.
The most common reason for relocating a water heater is to create more usable space inside the home. Hot water systems are often bulky and not the most visually appealing appliance, so relocating them outdoors can also improve the aesthetic and functionality of interior spaces.
We recently helped a Liverpool customer relocate their Rheem electric hot water system from inside their laundry to an unused area in their garden, next to the air conditioning unit. Within a few hours, they were enjoying uninterrupted hot water and had gained valuable space to reorganise their laundry.
The process of relocating a water heater.
Relocating a water heater requires careful planning to ensure the new setup is safe, efficient, and compliant with regulations. Here’s an overview of the steps involved:
- Choosing the right location: The new location should be convenient, safe, and suitable for the heater. It’s essential to confirm that the water heater is designed for both indoor and outdoor installation.
- Plumbing and electrical adjustments: The new location must allow for efficient connection to the water supply, drainage system, and power source.
- Insulating the water heater: For outdoor installations, proper insulation is crucial to protect the system from weather exposure and maintain its efficiency over time.
The water heater relocation process.
- Preparation: We begin by draining the water heater to make it easier to move.
- Disconnecting: The heater is carefully disconnected from its existing plumbing and electrical connections.
- Setting up the new location: A solid, level surface is prepared outdoors, ensuring proper drainage and any necessary adjustments to the plumbing and electrical systems.
- Reconnection: Once relocated, the heater is reconnected to the water and power systems, and insulation is applied to protect it from the elements.
- Testing: After ensuring all connections are secure, the system is powered back on and tested to confirm it is functioning correctly.
The benefits of relocating a water heater outside.
- More space: Freeing up indoor space can make rooms like the laundry more functional and aesthetically pleasing.
- Improved organisation: With the heater removed, customers can add storage or redesign the space for better usability.
- Enhanced safety: Moving the water heater outside reduces the risk of water damage indoors if the tank leaks or fails.
- Energy efficiency: Insulating the heater for outdoor conditions ensures it continues to operate efficiently, lowering energy consumption.
- Easier maintenance: Outdoor placement makes maintenance and repairs more accessible.
- Increased property value: A better-organised home with additional storage and improved aesthetics is often more appealing to potential buyers.Do you want your water heater moved from inside to outside?

Orange hot water with a metal taste
We received a call from a Liverpool customer whose hot water system had burst, causing water to spill from the top of the tank. They had noticed their hot water was orange in colour and had a metallic smell for some time. Recognising these signs as a serious issue, John, our hot water specialist, scheduled a visit later that morning.
Before arriving, John guided the customer over the phone on how to shut off the water supply to the hot water system, preventing further flooding and minimising potential damage.
Diagnosing the problem.
Once onsite, it was clear that the hot water tank was severely corroded. The rust inside the tank had caused the water to turn orange and develop a strong metallic odour and taste. John explained to the customer that the system was beyond repair due to its age and condition and needed to be replaced.
After disconnecting and draining the old system, the extent of the corrosion was evident. The water inside the tank was heavily rusted, and the metallic smell confirmed the internal damage.
What causes orange hot water?
Rusty or orange water occurs when the interior of a hot water tank starts to corrode. To prevent this, many systems are equipped with sacrificial anodes—steel core rods coated in magnesium, aluminum, or zinc. These anodes corrode over time instead of the tank itself, protecting the water heater through a process called electrolysis.
However, anodes typically last only 3.5 to 5 years. Once they are fully corroded, they can no longer protect the tank, leading to rust and deterioration. Regular replacement of the anode is essential to prolonging the life of your hot water system and avoiding costly repairs.
How to prevent water heater corrosion.
If your water heater is more than 3.5 years old, it’s a good idea to check whether the anode needs replacing. Contact us with the make and model of your system, and we can advise if a service is required. Timely anode replacement can prevent rust, ensuring your hot water system operates efficiently and lasts longer.
