Rheem Loline solar hot water system service.
Over a decade ago, we installed a Rheem Loline solar hot water system at property in Liverpool. To ensure the system remains in excellent condition, we schedule regular maintenance every five years.
Routine servicing is essential for keeping hot water systems operating safely and efficiently, while also extending their lifespan. This proactive approach helps homeowners avoid costly breakdowns and replacements. A typical service takes around 30 to 45 minutes and provides peace of mind with uninterrupted hot water supply.
During a recent visit to the Liverpool home, hot water specialist, John, conducted a thorough inspection and service. Here’s an overview of the process:
- Assessed the site for safety and took necessary precautions.
- Disconnected the system from the power supply and performed safety tests using external devices.
- Inspected the anode and replaced it with a new 1500mm anode. (Details about anodes below.)
- Tested the temperature pressure relief (TPR) valve, identified a fault, and replaced it with a new 15mm RMC HTE55-1 1000kpa TPR valve.
- Checked the heating element for proper OHM readings—no issues found.
- Inspected and tested the thermostat for continuity—no issues detected.
- Tested the pump, glycol levels, and sensors—no faults identified.
- Recommissioned the system and verified load readings after restoring power.
- Cleaned the site and removed all service-related waste.
Why hot water system maintenance is important
To keep your hot water system operating at its best, schedule servicing by a licensed hot water technician every five years. Failure to do so may void the manufacturer’s warranty. Additionally, most manufacturers require installation and servicing by qualified professionals to honour warranty terms. Don’t risk costly repairs or replacements—always rely on licensed specialists.
What is a water heater anode?
An anode is a steel-core rod installed in hot water tanks to prevent rust and corrosion. These rods, coated in magnesium, aluminum, or zinc, act as a “sacrificial” component, protecting the tank through a process called electrolysis. Instead of the tank’s exposed steel corroding, the anode deteriorates first, safeguarding the system.
Anodes typically last 3.5 to 5 years. Once fully corroded, they can no longer protect the tank, which then becomes vulnerable to rust and damage. Regularly replacing the anode is a simple and cost-effective way to extend your water heater’s lifespan and avoid expensive repairs.
By staying proactive with maintenance, you can ensure your hot water system runs efficiently for years to come, saving you time, money, and stress.
Faulty Dux water heater repair.
A customer in Lakemba recently contacted us when their Dux electric hot water system stopped producing hot water. Within a few hours, Steve was onsite at their apartment to diagnose and repair the issue.
After conducting a series of diagnostic tests, Steve discovered that the terminal block had burnt out. This was due to an improper installation by the original plumber (not Cheapa Hot Water), where the active and neutral wires were not securely tightened into the terminal block. Over time, this oversight caused the block to burn out.
Thankfully, further testing revealed that all other components of the hot water system were functioning correctly. Steve replaced the faulty terminal block with a new one, and the hot water system was back up and running in no time.
Why correct water heater installation is paramount
Many hot water system issues we encounter stem from improper installations by non-specialist plumbers. Unfortunately, such mistakes often void the manufacturer’s warranty, leaving homeowners to bear the cost of repairs or replacements.
At Cheapa Hot Water, we are authorised to install and repair all types of electric, gas, and solar hot water systems. By choosing a qualified hot water specialist, you ensure your system operates efficiently and your warranty remains valid.

Leaking hot water system repair and replacement.
This customer in Granville contacted us about their old Dux electric hot water system, which was leaking and providing only lukewarm water.
Once onsite, John found that the leak was worse than described. Water was pooling around the system, which had been installed directly on the soil—a major contributing factor to the problem. Over time, the bottom of the tank had rusted out, causing the leak.
Why water heaters shouldn’t be installed directly on soil
Installing a hot water system directly on soil significantly reduces its lifespan, as exposure to moisture causes the tank to rust from the bottom up. Outdoor systems should always be installed on a concrete slab or a sturdy concrete paver to prevent this issue.
Replacing the leaking water heater
After inspecting the damage, John confirmed that the Dux water heater was beyond repair. He discussed the family’s changing hot water needs and presented options for a new system. Since the original unit was installed, the household’s requirements had increased—teenagers now used more hot water, and visiting family added to the demand.
The customer chose a Vulcan 250-litre electric hot water system (model: 6D1250R7), part of Rheem’s builders’ range. Known for their reliability and affordability, Vulcan systems come with a 10-year warranty and offer excellent performance. This particular model, with a 270-litre capacity and 250-litre hot water delivery, is ideal for larger households of 3-5 people.
John prepared the site by installing a proper base to prevent future rusting issues. The new Vulcan system was installed quickly and efficiently, and within a few hours, the family was enjoying reliable hot water again.
The customer can now rest assured that their new water heater is protected against premature rusting and will meet their household’s needs for years to come.

Vulcan electric water heater repair.
When a Bankstown family found themselves without hot water one morning, they quickly reached out to us for urgent assistance. With busy parents and a house full of children, they needed a same-day solution. We arranged to visit their Western Sydney home later that morning.
Upon arrival, hot water expert John inspected their Vulcan electric hot water system (model 491315) and performed a series of diagnostic tests. The issue turned out to be multiple failing components—a common situation in older systems where the failure of one part often triggers a chain reaction.
Fortunately, the trusty Vulcan hot water system was still within economical repair. John promptly replaced the faulty temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve and the anode, restoring the system to full working order.
What is a TPR valve and why is it important?
The temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve is a critical safety feature in any hot water system. Its primary function is to release excess pressure and temperature from the tank, preventing potential damage or even explosions.
As water heats, it expands, creating pressure inside the tank. When the pressure exceeds safe limits, the TPR valve automatically opens, releasing the excess to the outside. Similarly, if the water temperature becomes too high, the valve opens to vent the heat.
It’s essential to ensure your TPR valve is installed and functioning correctly. A faulty valve can lead to dangerous situations, making regular maintenance and inspection critical for your hot water system’s safety and reliability.
No gas hot water. Pilot light constantly extinguishing.
A customer in Parramatta recently contacted us after returning home to find their hot water barely lukewarm. Steve was nearby at another customer’s home and was able to visit the property after completing the job.
On arrival, he found an older Rheem gas hot water system located in the downstairs rumpus room. The pilot light had gone out, which was preventing the water heater from functioning.
What does the pilot light do?
The pilot light in a gas hot water system is a small flame that ignites the main burner whenever the water in the tank needs to be heated. If the pilot light goes out, the burner cannot ignite, leaving you with no hot water.
This can happen for several reasons, such as strong winds, gas line maintenance in your area, or even an empty LPG cylinder. However, in this case, a closer inspection revealed a more serious issue.
Diagnosing and fixing the problem
Steve discovered that the hot water tank had developed a leak, which was extinguishing the pilot light. The issue wasn’t as simple as relighting it. Leaks in the internal tank of a hot water system are often a sign of aging and corrosion, and unfortunately, repairs are not a cost-effective option in such cases.
The best solution was to replace the old gas hot water system entirely. The customer also took this opportunity to upgrade to a larger storage tank, ensuring their growing household could enjoy longer showers and run multiple appliances simultaneously without running out of hot water.
New hot water system installation
Steve began by draining and disconnecting the old water heater. With internal systems, this step requires extra caution to prevent damage to the surrounding area. Once the old unit was removed, he installed a new Rheem Stellar 360 (160-litre, model 850360) in the same location.
Within just a few hours, the family had reliable hot water again, with a larger capacity system that better suited their needs.
